Center Grove 48, Ben Davis 20

The Trojans used a dominant second half to roll past the Giants.

Most of the first half was a defensive grinder as defenses from both teams imposed their will and no team gave much separation.

Connor Fruits got things started early for the Trojans as he took the ball into the end zone from 35 yards out to give Center Grove a 10-0 lead with 11:02 left in the half. The Giants responded quickly, as Trent Gipson scrambled into the end zone from 25 yards out as Giants as cut the Trojans lead to 10-7.

The Trojans defense came up big to open the second half, as James Schott came up with an interception and took it to the house from 50 yards out making it 20-7. The Trojans quickly got the ball back as they recovered a costly Ben Davis fumble and just a few short plays later Tayven Jackson found Connor Delp in the back of the end zone to give the Trojans a 27-7 lead with 9:36 left in the quarter.

Daniel Weems got in on the action as well, as he busted up the middle of the Giants defense for another score and a 34-7 lead.

“We just needed to stop the bleeding tonight,” said Center Grove coach Eric Moore said. “Tonight, we found the strength and we made some big plays. When you make big plays like we’re capable of that is when good things happen.”

Fishers 27, HSE 6

FISHERS– The Fishers football team is 4-0 for the first time in 10 years and second time in school history. While that’s an impressive feat in itself, it becomes even more remarkable considering it matches the Tigers’ win total from last season’s 4-7 campaign.

Fishers used a dominant defensive effort and third-quarter offensive outburst to pull away arch-rival Hamilton Southeastern 27-6 on Friday night in front of a huge crowd at Fishers High School.

For subscribers:Fishers improves to 4-0 for first time in 10 years with Mudsock win over HSE

Although Fishers’ stats aren’t jumping off the page so far this season, they’re finding ways to win. On Friday, the Tigers (4-0, 2-0 Hoosier Crossroads Conference) did the little things to win. In the first half, they recorded an interception, punted well and blocked a field goal as time expired in the second quarter.

Offensively, the Tigers put the game away by scoring touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the third quarter – the first a 26-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Marcus Roux to Jeffery Simmons to push the lead to 13-0 and the second on a seven-yard scamper from senior tailback Dylan Scally to give Fishers a 20-0 lead.

Scally finished with 73 yards rushing on 18 carries. HSE quarterback Andrew Hobson threw for 259 yards passing, but was intercepted twice.

HSE drops to 1-3 and 0-3 in the HCC.

Warren Central 40, Lawrence Central 21

Fresh off a huge win against rival Lawrence North, the Lawrence Central Bears hoped to push their luck against class 6A No.2 Warren Central. Unfortunately for the Bears, they met a stout Warren Central offense who controlled the clock throughout the game. The Warriors established a running game early on and never winced back. However, the Warriors’ rushing offense wasn’t the most impressive part of their performance. Rather, It was their passing offense led by senior quarterback Cobe Moore. Moore diced up the Bears defense finishing with three passing touchdowns in route of a 40-21 win.

“The key to the offense tonight was just keeping confidence,” Moore said. “The last three weeks have been kind of rough for us, but we’ve been working pretty hard at practice lately.”

Moore wasn’t the only one making plays. He connected twice in the red zone with the 6-foot 3-inch Mikal Clarke. Running back and safety Randy Wells also had a great game both on the ground and disturbing the Bears offense. He racked up a rushing touchdown and snagged an interception.

On the other side, poor special teams play resulted in two Lawrence Central kick return touchdowns, including one that went 99 yards. With each kick return, the Bears breathed new life. However, each spark was often put to rest by an outstanding Warrior defense. Regardless, Bears quarterback Jasen Graves made a few key plays to keep the team from falling too far behind. Late in the third, Graves took it into his own hands on an impressive 35-yard rushing touchdown on a fourth down. Running back Cortaveon Barnett also put on a show with a kick return touchdown and a few highlight plays. The Warriors defense prevailed in the end, forcing the Bears off the field often.

Warren Central improves their record to 3-1 and heads to Ben Davis next week to take on the Giants. Lawrence Central falls to 1-3 on their way to Pike.

Decatur Central 47, Martinsville 18

The Decatur Central Hawks handled their business at home on Friday nightby defeating the Martinsville Artesians by a score of 47-18. Martinsville entered the week ranked ninth in 4A, while Decatur Central received four votes in the 5A rankings.

However, the 9th ranked 4A team was unable to get any offense going in the first half.

On the other end, the Hawks started off quick, scoring two touchdowns in their first two drives, both coming off long TD passes on 4th down situations.

“Martinsville beat us least year, our kids knew we had to get off to a hot start,” said Decatur Central Head Coach Kyle Enright. “I thought we played pretty darn well in the first half.”

The Hawks dominated the first half. They entered the break with a 28-6 lead, and Martinsville had only just managed to sneak in the end zone before half. This touchdown gave the Artesians some momentum as they quickly added another once the third quarter started.

That momentum quickly shifted as Decatur Central turned to the ground game. They ate up big chunks of the clock in the second half, and nearly always ended in the end zone. Whenever Martinsville did get the ball, the Hawks defense was able to manage anything that came at them.

The Artesains were able to get in the end zone again in the fourth quarter, however it was far too little and too late. The Hawks emerged victorious by 29 points.

“I’m really proud of them, they came out and fought,” Enright said. “Looking forward to next week against our rival, Mooresville.”

Decatur Central will travel to Mooresville next week to face off against the first ranked team in 4A while Martinsville will host Franklin Community High School.

New Palestine 49, Mt. Vernon (Fortville) 7

The New Palestine Dragons extended their regular season winning streak to 58, tied for third longest in state history, with a 49-7 victory over Hoosier Heritage Conference rival Mt. Vernon. The win was also New Palestine’s eighth straight over the Marauders.

New Palestine’s dominance over Mt. Vernon this decade is apparent in more than the win column. Entering Friday’s game, the Marauders hadn’t even scored a touchdown against the Dragons since 2015. This dry spell was remedied early in the game, however, when Mt. Vernon quarterback Shaun Shipley snuck into the endzone from the goal line to give the Marauders an early 7-7 tie with the Dragons. It would be the last time they scored.

The Dragons were their usual dominant selves in the ground game offensively but were uncharacteristically sloppy with blocking technique. Flags piled up for holding and illegal blocks in the back as New Palestine (4-0) saw solid play after solid play get erased.

“We were really sloppy,” New Palestine head coach Kyle Ralph said. “Like really, really sloppy by us. It was just uncharacteristic. I was glad that we were blocking physically. But sometimes when guys are upfield and trying so hard to get blocks, things happen. That was an exceptional amount of flags on our blocks. It definitely hurt us.”

Luckily for Ralph, he happened to have the state’s all-time leader in rushing yardage, Charlie Spegal, to turn to. While some of his runs were called back, there were plenty that were played clean. That was all Spegal needed.

New Palestine had Mt. Vernon’s defense lulled to sleep regarding the run game thanks to a bevvy of quick slants and screens in the first half. Not paying attention the Spegal can prove costly. Spegal galloped to four touchdowns on the day and amassed plenty of other devastating runs before being tracked down.

Mt. Vernon (3-1) was forced to hone in on Spegal, which opened the door for New Palestine quarterback Lincoln Roth to shine. Twice in the second half, he made the correct decision on a zone read and sprinted to an easy score. Buoyed by a tenacious defense, the Dragons never had to worry about a comeback past the first quarter and cruised to the victory.

New Palestine completes its three-game homestand next week when the 3-1 Pendleton Heights Arabians will pay a visit to Kelso Stadium.

Mooresville 31, Greenwood 7

Class 4A, No. 1 Mooresville used a ball-control rushing attack and took advantage of threefirst half Greenwood turnovers to romp to a 31-7 victory over the Woodman Friday.

The win moves to Pioneers to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-State Conference. It’s also the third straight win over the Woodman after 10-straight losses in the series.

The tailback duo of Breken Greene and Caden Robinson helped the Pioneers dominate the game, combining for 173 yards on 30 carries (10-for-90 by Robinson) and three touchdowns (two for Greene).

Cathedral 31, Bishop Chatard 21

The Northside Knight of Columbus Trophy is returning to Cathedral.

The Irish were able to pull away from Bishop Chatard in the fourth quarter after trailing coming into the second half. Cathedral was able to capitalize on a Trojans fumble on the first play of the second half, leading to a 24-yard touchdown run from Daylen Hall to put the Irish up 10-7.

For subscribers:How three plays allowed Cathedral to topple Bishop Chatard

Cathedral coach Bill Peebles opted to onside kick on the very next play. The decision proved to be the right one as the Irish recovered and turned it into a touchdown, establishing a 10-point lead Chatard was never able to fully recover from.

Quarterback Orin Edwards threw for 226 yards, rushed for another 129 and accounted for two total touchdowns. Trojans quarterback Kyle Cheek threw for 246 yards and one touchdown, but also threw two interceptions.

Brebeuf Jesuit 20, Guerin Catholic 15

Guerin entered undefeated and dominated time of possession and number of offensive plays in Friday night’s Circle City Conference showdown between the Class 3A No. 5 Eagles and No. 8 host Brebeuf. Ordinarily, that’s a recipe that works in a team’s favor, but the Braves defense showed out in their homecoming game.

Brebeuf (3-1, 1-1 in the CCC) finished with 4.5 sacks, another six tackles for loss, and a game-sealing interception by do-it-all senior Gabe Wright in a 20-15 win.

For subscribers:'The sky's the limit.' Brebeuf's defense, versatility pushes Braves past Guerin

Wright, who finished with 100 receiving yards on seven catches and scored the game-winning touchdown with a 28-yard fourth-quarter reception, also blocked an extra point, returned kicks, played defensive back, and at times punted for the Braves. Senior quarterback Caleb Ellison completed 9-of-16 passes for 117 yards with two passing touchdowns and another 59 yards rushing with a touchdown.

Guerin (3-1, 0-1) ran 76 plays to the Braves’ 44, controlling the clock for nearly 30 minutes, compared to 18 for Brebeuf. Senior quarterback Christian Gelov threw for 232 yards on 18-of-26 passing for the Eagles. Senior Bernie McGuinness added 101 receiving yards with a touchdown on eight catches.
