What is the best position in harness racing? ›

The position behind the leader is popular because the horse does not have to use much petrol during the run. He just gets a cart up behind the leader. When the horse that has been behind the leader throughout the race gets clear, he usually has a good sprint left and can run down the leader if there has been pace on.

Most harness races in America are at a distance of one mile and speeds during a race can be up to 40 miles per hour. The fastest Standardbred in the world is Bulldog Hanover who paced a mile in 1:45.4 (that's one minute, forty five and 4/5 of a second!).

Use the Correct Harness Slots

On rear-facing car seats, the shoulder straps should come through the car seat slots at or just BELOW your child's shoulders. On forward-facing seats, the shoulder straps should be at or just ABOVE the shoulders.

The best post positions in terms of win rate are all multiples of five: the No. 5, No. 10, and No. 20 spots have all produced double-digit win rates - even with the 20 position only having been in place for the 11 Kentucky Derby races prior to 2024.

Seat Position
