Monsignor Byrnes, a native of Mobile, was ordained in 1935 at the immaculate Conception Cathedral in Mobile by the late Most Rev. T.J. Toolen. He was superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Mobile from 1939 to 1957, Rector of the Cathedral Parish in Mobile from 1957 to 1964, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Pensacola from 1964 to 1971 and Vicar General of the Diocese of St. Augustine in 1968.

He retired from active ministry in 1971 and from the Diocese of Pensacola- Tallahassee which began in 1976. He is survived by his niece, Theresa Byrnes of Mobile, and his nephew, M.M. McFayden of Mobile. Funeral mass will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral of Sacred Heart.
