McGOUGH, THOMAS, of Flor- ence, died Saturday, November 24, 2001 in Hanceville. He resided at Victorian Manor in Hanceville and had previously resided at Benedictine Manor in Cullman.

Thomas White McGough was born in Birmingham, Ala. June 28, 1906, the first child of Nell White and Thomas Aloysius McGough. His maternal grandfather, William White, a Civil War mercenary from county Limerick, Ireland, Mustered out of the Confederate Army in Nashville, Tennessee and moved to Birmingham where he worked in the first rolling steel mill. His paternal grandfather, Matthew McGough, was a baker from Belfast who practiced his profession in Chattanooga and Nashville before moving to Birmingham. After graduating from St.

Bernard Prep School in Cullman in 1923, he worked in his father's bakery. In 1925 he drove cross country with friends to work in California. He next sold bakery equipment for the Century Machine Company from a base in Pittsburgh. His territory covered seven states from Pennsylvania to Norfolk, VA. In 1939, he married an Englishwoman, Lynn Lacey, who was living in Pittsburgh.

Their honeymoon trip to Birmingham was her first visit to the south and her first meeting with his family. He spent the next two years learning the baking business while working in his father's plants in Hattiesburg, Miss. and Birmingham. In 1941, he bought a storefront bakery in Florence, AL. which became home for the next 50 years.

Through World War II he operated the bakery on Court Street in Florence and in the early 50's he opened Southern Frigid Dough, which made frozen rolls, bread, fruit pies and meat pies. After that business merged with the Jesse Jewell Company of Gainesville, Mr. McGough continued with the business as manager of both operations. He retired for several years and in the early 60's went into real estate as a home builder and as one of the developers of English Village Shopping Center. In addition to business involvements, he was always active in the Catholic Church and civic affairs.

In the mid 40's he was instrumental in helping raise money for a new classroom building with modern kitchen for St. Joseph Parish School in Florence. He was on the board of trustees of St. Bernard College and Pope John XXIII made him a Knight of St. Gregory.

In addition, he was president of The Rotary Club and was a member of the first board of directors of the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club. He is survived by his children, Matthew Lacey and Carolyn Bruninga McGough of Conyers, GA. and Wray and Mary Lynn McGough Eckl of Atlanta, his brother, William Patrick McGough of Birmingham, sister-in-law, Mrs. Joseph Matthew McGough of Montgomery, AL; and grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Monday evening at St.

Brown Service West Chapel Funeral Home, 744-7666, directing. SMITH, MARIUS passed away I November 23, 2001. Born August 16, 1906, in Marion, Alabama, he was 95 years old. Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Alabama in 1927 where he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity.

After graduation, he joined the First National Bank in Birmingham. He was employed there until joining the Army Air Corp in 1942, serving in its Finance Department throughout World War II. His tour of duty included two years in England. Returning to Birmingham, he joined the Internal Revenue Service and was employed there for 26 years, retiring in 1971. Following retirement, he moved to Marion where he was active in local churches, serving as the Treasurer of both the Episcopal and Presbyterian Churches.

In later years, Mr. Smith moved to the Fair Haven North in Birmingham. He is survived by many cousins: Mrs. Gannet Backus of Roswell, GA; Mrs. Grace Barrington of Chadds Ford, PA; Mrs.

Thomas Howard of Manchester, MA; Mrs. Thomas McCulley, Mr. Clive Mason, Mr. Mark Myatt, and Mr. Joshua Oden, all of Birmingham.

He had been director of Zamora Unit Directors. WEATHINGTON, MRS. MYRTLE WIGGINS, age 92, of Birmingham, passed away on Sunday, November 25, 2001. She was a member of Hoover First Methodist Church and retired from the State of California with 25 years service.
